Orange Bag Domestic Recycling Project

November 15, 2016

The e'Thekwini Municipality enables 956,000 households around Durban to recycle a total of 71,000 tonnes of paper and plastic every month! This project won a Gold Impumelelo Innovations Award in 2010.

Since the launch of the Orange Bag Domestic Recycling Project, the volumes of the products being recycled have steadily increased. Annually, the project recovers about 14, 400 tons of good valuable recycling products which have made way to the various recycling markets to be recycled, re-used and re-engineered.

DSW has been instrumental in implementing the award winning project as another first for eThekwini Municipality, striving to ensure there is continuous focus and growth in the recycling industry. The orange bag is a valuable commodity ensuring products such as paper, cardboard, cans, glass, plastic, and plastic bottles, polystyrene and Tetra-Pak are recycled.

Every project comes with it’s challenges in some areas which requires immediate attention to ensure smooth development. “We are experiencing some problems with the residents using the orange bag for the disposal of domestic and garden waste. DSW appeals to all residents not to disposeof contaminated waste such as garden waste, food, ewaste, cans, and glass into the orange bags. To prevent further abuse, the bags that contain contaminated waste are identified by affixing stickers around the bags which are then placed back into the owner’s property together with a letter of notification. These bags will only be collected by operations on the next collection day provided it does not contain any type of garden waste,” DSW spokesman, Neeri Govender.

As of April 1, residents have been encouraged to put out cans and bottles for recycling using their own bags. The contractors will be collecting both the orange bags and the different recyclables on the same day as the domestic collection.

You can make a difference by ensuring that your own household is sorting all recyclables before disposal. DSW applauds you in participating in this outstanding project, and looks forward to your continued support.
